Housing Authority Recovers from Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene caused severe damage up and down the East Coast leading New Jersey’s 21 counties being declared a disaster area.  The City of Passaic was not spared, suffering substantial damage due to Passaic River flooding. Four of our six complexes were affected and residents of Vreeland Village had to be evacuated from their homes in canoes by the City of Passaic Fire Department. The extent of the damage has yet to be assessed, but initial estimates total several hundred thousand dollars between structural, materials, and equipment damage. The City of Passaic was very helpful in their response to the Vreeland Village inundation in the peak of the storm and should be commended for their rapid response and for helping displaced families without relatives in the area. Staff worked around the clock to get essential building systems back into operation in order to minimize disruption. Special focus was placed on insuring the health and safety of our senior citizen residents of the East Monroe apartments where water inundated the mechanical rooms. The PHA is now working with insurer carriers to begin the clean-up and rebuilding efforts.

Scholarship Awarded to PHA Student

The New Jersey chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NJNAHRO) recently made two student scholarships available to students who reside in public housing.  In the past, the scholarships had been for $4,000 each, this year the organization increased the amount to $8,000.  One of this year’s two recipients was our very own Bri’Asia Combs of  Vreeland Village.  Ms. Combs was an exemplary student, graduating with a 3.9 G.P.A., as well as receiving a score of 1250 on her SATs.  She is currently attending Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina.  She has been invited to the closing ceremony of the NJNAHRO conference in Atlantic City on Friday, November 8th, 2011 to be officially recognized for her achievement.  We are all very proud of her, and wish her the best of luck in the future.
